Biblical Integration
Our Reading, Language Arts, Phonics and Spelling curriculum emphasize the system and orderliness of the English language. Its emphasis on "system" helps students understand that language, a gift from God, reflects the orderliness of His nature. The student will learn to use language as a tool for communicating God's word to others.
Reading Logs - Monthly Celebrations
Research shows that students who read at least 20-30 minutes per day at their independent level continue to grow and improve in their literacy and fluency levels. An important part of 2nd grade is the “Reading Calendar” placed in their home/school folder. The amount of time spent on all reading outside the classroom will be recorded on these calendars.
We ask that you please partner with us by monitoring the reading your child does at home and we will monitor reading done at school. At the end of each month, we will have a Reading Celebration where each child will be recognized for the reading he/she did for the month and we will total the number of minutes we read as a class. If you would like to donate a special treat (pencils, stickers, etc) for a monthly reward, please let your teacher know!

Daily 5 Literacy
The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while teachers provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. Students will be engaged in the Daily Five, which are comprised of:
- Read to Self
- Work on Writing
- Read to Someone
- Listen to Reading
- Word Work
Reading AR (Accelerated Reader)
Accelerated Reader is an individualized computer reading activity to increase comprehension and vocabulary while building accountability for reading and maintaining meaning. Each student is given a reading assessment each quarter to determine their reading level/range. You will receive a letter with your child's current reading level range and points to obtain each 9 weeks by taking AR tests each time a book is read. After the reading level and point goal is determined, the student may check out books from the school library and take them home to read.
To help prepare for the test, the student could be asked questions regarding the story's details. After this, when a student feels he or she is ready, they will take an AR test on the iPad in the classroom or library during library time each week. Picture books are usually 5 questions and worth .5 pts with chapter books 10 questions worth up to many points depending on the level. Students may only take tests at school during the hours of 8:20 to 3:20. Testing is not available online at home. At the end of each 9 week period, students who have earned their points goal will be invited to a special celebration.
Students’ usernames are usually their first initial and first four letters of their last names. Students will chose a password during their library time which will be needed to access the program. Teachers will send home information to be notified each time your child takes a test and the results will be emailed to you.
Students should bring their AR books to school each day as we encourage them to read these during the day as well. AR is not counted towards the student's reading grade in any way, but that does not diminish the importance of the program.
