Second graders are developmentally progressing from the “me centered” (egocentric) age where children perceive that everything revolves around them into an age that has the capacity for self-evaluation. They begin to recognize failure and can be very sensitive to criticism. They are transitioning from dependence to independence. A balance between external guidance and self-reflection produces a sense of competence, setting the stage for greater self-direction and independent thinking. They begin to recognize personal strengths and areas that need support to set individual and academic goals. Second grade students can now begin to “own” the idea that God has made each of us with special gifts and talents.
Being accepted by friends becomes even more important at this age. This strong desire can sometimes cause internal conflicts. In our classroom discussions we will reflect the belief that God’s Word provides the answers we need to such issues as honesty, obedience, respect for others, and self-esteem.
God’s love and care for us will be an underlying theme in each area of study. Students will discuss the application of biblical principles to life, and begin thinking about their part in developing a right relationship with Christ. We are intentional about integrating all subject areas in relationship to God's Word. We teach and think about God and biblical truths as one seamless curriculum.
Personal responsibility and organizational skills will be emphasized daily and we will strive to honor God through excellence. We look forward to experiencing discovery, excitement and laughter with your precious children this year!
Our Second Grade teacher team will be drawing from many learning theories. We will do whatever it takes to teach students through an integrated method based on best practices and current educational research. We look forward to partnering with you to help our students become self-directed learners, productive citizens, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and cooperative contributors in the classroom as well as society.
