Homework
Homework is an extension of classroom learning and is an opportunity for you to see what we are learning and practicing in school. Homework should be completed independently.
Nightly Reading: Second graders should read a minimum of 20 minutes 4-5x week (you can ease into this) and record minutes on their monthly reading logs calendar in their take-home folder. This can be any book, from any source. It can also be reading alone, or reading together with a parent or sibling. It does not include reading time at school. At the end of each month, we will celebrate our top boy and girl reader as well as our whole class reading minute totals. Students who read a minimum of 400 minutes per month and turn in their recorded minutes by the due date will earn a special treat or reward!
Spelling: Our spelling test is on Friday morning, unless a short week, then will be the last day of the week. Words can be found on our parent newsletter on this website every Friday for the upcoming week as well as in the daily homework folder.
Bible: Students have weekly Bible verses to recite by memory each Monday morning. We will introduce the verse and practice at school every day. This is not graded, but we want students to do their very best as it pleases the Lord! These are printed in your child's folder as well as available for download under the tab Memory Verse above.
Reading/Writing: (Starting after Christmas) Your child will bring home a paper to complete at home and return it the last day of the week. Students will read a passage and show comprehension pertaining to Reading and Language Arts skills studied.
Projects: Throughout the year, we also have required family/home projects such as our "Fall into Books" book report bags, Westward Expansion teepees & covered wagons, and Growing Our Hearts service project in February. We also encourage several *optional projects in Science and History. We will send home detailed instructions for all projects with a months notice so you can plan accordingly with your schedule.
